A Place to Call Home

"A Place to Call Home" delves into the poignant journey of self-discovery and longing for belonging experienced by the protagonist, as he grapples with the complexities of identity, culture, and nostalgia against the backdrop of Havana, Cuba.

Years have passed since the protagonist last witnessed the breathtaking sunsets and strolled along the waterfront promenade of his childhood in Havana. Reflecting on the memories of his upbringing in the vibrant city, he recalls a time when its streets felt like a different world, filled with hidden treasures and endless exploration.

As he navigates the maze of his past, the protagonist confronts the stark realities and untold truths hidden behind the colonial facades and colorful streets of Havana. Life was simpler then, shaped by the traditions and customs passed down through generations. However, as he matured, clarity replaced innocence, and he began to unravel the mysteries shrouding his mother's perpetual sadness.

In his quest for a sense of belonging, the protagonist journeyed to distant lands, seeking familiarity and connection. Yet, despite his efforts, he never truly felt at home, yearning for the companionship of old friends and the comforting embrace of the life he once knew in Havana.

Returning to Havana, he is met with a city that has evolved and changed, challenging his idealized memories of home. The once carefree atmosphere has shifted, replaced by a sense of uncertainty and transience. Yet, amidst the changes, he is captivated by the resilience and unwavering pride of the local community, who find solace in their shared heritage and the spirited rhythm of Cuban life.

Contemplating the essence of place and culture, the protagonist grapples with questions of identity and belonging against the backdrop of Havana's vibrant streets and lively plazas. He marvels at how Cuban society can maintain its unity and sense of belonging, even in the face of adversity and change. Witnessing the bonds of family and friendship woven into the fabric of everyday life, he begins to rediscover himself and his place in the world.

As the protagonist embarks on a journey of self-discovery, he realizes that his story is still unfolding, with every moment shaping his understanding of who he is and where he belongs. "A Place to Call Home" is a heartfelt exploration of the human experience, reminding us that home is not merely a physical location but a profound sense of connection and belonging to the people and memories that shape our lives.

This film was shot In January 2014 in Havana, Cuba over eight days.
